Labels All Around

Every garment seems to have a label. These labels are stitched to the garment by the manufacturer before these are dispatched to the market. Earlier, most labels were usually found on the inside of the garment, located such that they were not easily visible from the outside. Recent trends indicate that labels are now being stitched on the most visible areas of the garments. Hence, we see labels on the sleeves of jackets, outside the back pockets of trousers, outside the shirt pockets, and so on.

Many garments have several labels both inside and outside the garments. The labels on the inside could be a label showing the size, another label on the inside showing the washing instructions, while the label showing the manufacturer’s brand may be prominently displayed at a commonly visible part of the garment on the outside.

In addition, there could be several labels printed on paper and attached to the garment. These could be labels for the price, and features of the garment. These labels are obviously removed by the user before wearing the garment.
These labels add to the cost of the garment It is usual for the high-end or expensive, branded garments to have several labels, and of course, the cost of all these labels is built into the end price, and the buyer ends up paying for all these extras.

On the other end, the low-priced and medium-priced garments have only a simple label somewhere on the inside, and invisible to all except the user of the garment. This is how it was in the beginning when the concept of labels was probably started.

Labels that are stitched to the garments are expected to have a long life, so that all aspects of the label are clearly visible till the garment is in use. By looking at the labels stitched to the garments, it should be possible to determine the name of the manufacturer, the country of origin, the size of the garment, and the washing instructions. Designs of labels, as well as their costs, are thus important aspects.
