Fashion seems to have become big business, and people from all sections of society spend a good deal of time and money on issues related to fashion. At the same time, there is total chaos in the world of fashion, since all kinds of fashion prevail at any given time, and there is no consensus among the society at large on these issues.
Fashion has evolved in society based on specific needs of each region, as well as among groups of people. Logically, there should be a good deal of consensus on issues of fashion among society as a whole, but the actual facts are a lot different. Most people have their own views on fashion, and prefer to take their own decisions. Since a large number of choices are easily available today, it becomes easy for people to take their own decisions.
The social background of people also has an important effect on their outlook on fashion. People with more rigid social values have a more well-defined code of conduct where fashion is concerned. Such social groups have a lower tolerance levels where deviations from the set norms are concerned. A good deal of moral policing is conducted to monitor the adherence to social values and norms in these rigid social groups.
Despite all this, even people from rigid social backgrounds have increasingly demonstrated their tilt towards more liberal styles of fashion. This is observed more due to the increasing interactions among people from all social groups at a global level. People get influenced by other social groups, and this is enough for them to adopt a different style or fashion. Depending on the extent to which they can influence their own groups, other members of their groups can also pick up these different fashions. This is how any single group of people can have a range of widely differing fashions as time passes.
Moral policing within their communities might continue, and become more harsh and strict, but the stricter it gets, the higher is the tendency for people to drift to other fashions, adding to confusion.
